Self-Confidence Must Be Earned — Coach Josh Wood Shows You How

From the couch to the Himalayas (and the TEDx stage), this powerful introvert helps others build the life habits that make success a given.

Coach Josh Wood is a powerful introvert—a fitness coach and TEDx speaker who guides his clients as far as they want to go, from the couch to the peaks of the Himalayas.

Based in Hobart, Tasmania, he coaches clients around the world in health and fitness—from tactical athletes like firefighters and police, to sports professionals, to everyday people like me.

Though he’s certainly physically powerful—competing in powerlifting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a certain strongman competition involving 80-kilo metal logs—his real influence comes from helping his clients build unshakable self-confidence, one baby step at a time. It’s this confidence that propels them to achieve goals they once thought impossible.

In this episode, we talk about what it’s like to show up as an introvert in a profession where extroversion is the norm—and what it takes to prepare for a TEDx talk. I couldn’t resist asking about “The Six Habits to Eat Like an Adult” from his talk, too.

On self-confidence Josh says,

I think people generally have the wrong idea … I came at the tail end of the participation  award era where everybody got an award for everything they  did.

[I was told to] just be confident. And that's not a real thing. You gain confidence by proving your competence to yourself.

He breaks down the role of motivation and discipline in achieving hard things—using techniques that work regardless of your personality type.

Josh is a genuinely good guy making a powerful impact in the world. I hope you listen to his story—and check out and share his TEDx talk!
